Oracle Open World 2016 – JD Edwards summary

Once again there were numerous sessions about JD Edwards during Oracle OpenWorld. The key themes at these sessions were:

  • Digital transformation
  • Cloud strategy
  • User experience

Digital Transformation

Powerful digital technology in the fields of mobility, connectivity, analytics and cloud computing offer organizations opportunities for innovation and success in today’s digital economy. If you succeed at integrating these technologies in your processes, business models and organization, they offer both opportunities and competitive advantage.

IT plays an important role in this so-called digital business transformation. During the JD Edwards sessions at Oracle OpenWorld, a number of speakers discussed why the JD Edwards ERP system is and remains an essential element in this digital landscape.

ERP is the heart of your IT landscape. And Oracle JD Edwards offers modern technology ways to apply other essential elements of digital business operations.

JD Edwards and digital transformation – a few examples

Using the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne mobile applications, your staff can work with JD Edwards on mobile platforms like tablets and smartphones. These mobile applications were updated recently to use the new features of Oracle’s Mobile Application Framework. The default mobile applications can be adapted and you can build your own mobile applications.

The Internet of Things makes the collection of information faster, easier and more precise by enabling direct communication between devices and linking devices to JD Edwards. This enables organizations to make more intelligent decisions, reduce costs and create new revenue flows. Oracle JD Edwards offers an integrated IoT platform for the integration of device information in JD Edwards applications: the IoT Orchestrator. The IoT Orchestrator Studio is an intuitive application for creating and adapting the orchestration components used by the IoT Orchestrator.

On our website you will find an Oracle whitepaper that includes information about the path towards digital transformation, and how you can continue to benefit most from your existing investment in Oracle JD Edwards.

Redfaire International is organizing a number of digital transformation workshops for JD Edwards clients. Which specific opportunities and challenges do new digital technologies offer and how do you develop a successful digital transformation strategy and roadmap? More information about dates and locations of these digital transformation workshops will be available shortly.

Cloud Strategy

Oracle Cloud was the main theme at this year’s Oracle OpenWorld. During the JD Edwards sessions we also looked how the cloud can enable and accelerate your digital business transformation. Hybrid cloud and freedom of choice are the key concepts in the JD Edwards cloud strategy. In order to protect your IT investment, it’s up to you to decide if, how and when you move to the cloud.

You can continue to run your JD Edwards applications on-premise or in an outsourced data centre. And even then, it is possible to expand your JD Edwards ERP system with a number of Oracle PaaS solutions or additional cloud applications like Oracle Product Hub Cloud and Oracle Sales Cloud.

Oracle IaaS

It is now also possible to run JD Edwards (application releases 9.1 and 9.2) in the Oracle Cloud. Oracle Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) provides the necessary server, storage and network capacity.

Oracle offers two JD Edwards EnterpriseOne solutions in the Oracle Cloud Marketplace:

  • JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Trial Edition (all-in-one sandbox) to try out the latest JD Edwards functionality.
  • JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Multi Tier Edition (enterprise server, HTML server and database server), including server manager and tools to move your data and customization from on-premise to the cloud. The use of the Oracle Database Cloud Service is an additional option.

See the Oracle website for more information about the possibilities and conditions.

Oracle PaaS

Oracle Platform as a Service (PaaS) in combination with JD Edwards offers you new opportunities for developing, integrating and using your applications. The advantages lie mainly in the addition and expansion of the functionality available in JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. In this situation, JD Edwards can remain on-premise. To make the most of the opportunities offered by the cloud, it is important that you are running a recent version of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne. Naturally, we will be happy to assist if you want to upgrade.

Internet of Things

The Oracle JD Edwards IoT solution is built on the open and expandable architecture of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne and makes it suitable for a machine-to-machine network. The result is a familiar and modern platform for clients, partners and other service providers to integrate machine information in existing and new JD Edwards applications. Integration of the JD Edwards IoT platform with the Oracle IoT Cloud Service gives you even more ways to benefit from the advantages of the Internet of Things.

In combination with the Oracle Internet of Things Cloud Service:

  • Suitable for a larger number of devices
  • High speed data processing
  • Advanced security features
  • Suitable for very large data volumes and integration features with BI Cloud Service and Big Data Cloud Service
  • Ability to integrate with various other applications and cloud services

Mobile

Over 80 mobile applications are available for JD Edwards, including for example applications for equipment maintenance, service management and sales order management. They were built with the Oracle Mobile Application Framework (MAF), and the default applications can be modified if required. Oracle Mobile Cloud Services (MCS) offers extensive possibilities for the development, use and monitoring of mobile applications. Together they offer a growth path in terms of numbers of users and type of application in the implementation of mobility in your digital business transformation. Business users can use the Mobile Application Accelerator (MAX), a so-called no-code mobile application composer in the cloud, to make mobile application themselves in their browser.

Integration

Oracle Integration Cloud Service is a new, modern integration platform in the cloud:

  • Simple and user friendly (point & click)
  • Comprehensible monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Supports both on-premise and cloud applications

The JD Edwards adapter for Oracle Integration Cloud Service will simplify system integrations between JD Edwards (tools release 9.2+), cloud applications and other on-premise applications. The integrations in Oracle Integration Cloud Service use the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne business services to do this.

Business Intelligence

Oracle Business Intelligence Cloud Service is a complete cloud solution for business intelligence and analytics. It offers features for extensive interactive dashboards, ad hoc queries, mobile analyses and reports, which enhance your control over your organization. Cadran has developed a complete integration with JD Edwards to allow faster use of Oracle BI Cloud Service. You can use this in the implementation of Oracle BI Cloud Service in particular to focus on determining the right information, and making it available to the right people at the right time in your organization.

User Experience

Oracle previously announced the new UX One user interface for JD Edwards. There were lots of opportunities to get to know this modern, user-friendly JD Edwards user interface during OpenWorld. Above all, UX One will give your users more possibilities for configuration and personalization.

Key elements of JD Edwards UX One

  • Alert, analyze, act model
  • Configuration and personalization without needing customization
  • Access always and everywhere

Oracle has announced that they will also include role-based content (like dashboards, café one screens and watch lists) for the main applications with UX One. The general principle is a systematic use of the alert-analyze-act model to allow users to carry out their daily work more effectively and more efficiently. And with the tools available in UX One, you can configure the interface yourself and personalize it for your users and applications.

New possibilities with UX One

UX One allows you to make even better use of existing user interface tools like E1 pages, café one and watch lists. And a number of attractive new tools will be added to this.

1. EnterpriseOne Search

Searching with keywords inside the system. By default, the following search areas are included: address book, item master and tasks. You can expand this yourself.

2. Page Composer

A new tool for configuring E1 pages and dashboards in JD Edwards from the web client and without needing to know HTML.

Even more possibilities for users to configure and personalize the screen layout of applications.

In addition to modifying grid formats, users will be able to determine which information they want to see on other screen elements, which will allow them to adapt the screen layout to their individual preferences without customization. Furthermore, in combination with café one this offers unparalleled features to configure combined screen layouts.

4. List View

List view grid formats display information on the grid one under the other rather than in separate columns. This means that a smaller screen width is big enough for the grid, which offers many advantages combined with café one, for example.
